Long time--since I read Stranger in a Strange Land

January 2nd, 2007 (10:57 pm)

Heinlein was never a real favourite of mine.
But that book.
THAT book--got to me.

I have a ravaged copy of it in soft back in my study somewhere...
in keeping with my ONE BOOK A WEEK new years resolution--I should probably
dig it out.

"I've found out why people laugh.
They laugh because it hurts...
because it's the only thing that'll make it stop hurting...
The goodness is in the laughing.
I grok it is a bravery...and a sharing...
against pain and sorrow and defeat."

Valentine, after watching a small primate at the zoo have his food taken from him
by a larger primate--and the small one, finding an even SMALLER primate to HIT
and take his food from him--our Protagonist laughs for the first time.

It is a broken sound, not like laughter at all--startles Gillian.
(i am remembering this, not quoting it--please feel free to correct me
it has been a looooong time since I read this book.)
She asks him what is wrong, he explains he was laughing.
That he finally understood what humour was.
That we laugh because it hurts.

She argues that that is not what humour is.
So He asks her: Tell me a joke.

(Think of a joke right now--your FAVOURITE joke,
even if it is a kids joke...someone is the fool.)

There is always a victim.
Always.

WE LAUGH because it hurts so much.

I've known my share of Stand-Up comedians in my time.
Dated them, even.
They are NOT happy people.

Poets and Comedians are NOTHING without their sorrow.

*tips a small cold shot of Monopolowa down her throat*

***and laughs and laughs and laughs***

A guy gets hit by an arrow, and it goes straight through his middle.
His friend comes up to him and asks, "Doesn't that hurt?"
He replies, "Only when I laugh"
