What a strange collection of days...

September 12th, 2006 (01:09 am)
current song: Papa Was A Rodeo - The Magnetic Fields

The hat story...

I will try, it would be better if my heart were fresh...

I went to Casino El Camino....I sat down, it was before my Birthday.

I didn't order, I don't have to order there.
Drinks were set before me.

To my left was an old Friend.
A hat designer.
He had a new hat.

He told me...about the hat he had.
He was waiting for the man
who had commissioned it
to show up and pay.

I was amazed.

It was a black Rodeo bent
Cowboy hat,
on the front he had painted....
A full moon, bright and huge.
Austin bats flying across it.
gorgeous.

I handled the hat with much envy.

INSIDE, he said, "that is the strangest part......"

(Lee picked up the hat and pealed back the hat liner to reveal THE BLUE FAIRY...)

"He had me paint this inside....I don't know why he wanted it INSIDE..."

That's the Blue Fairy from A.I. I said, wow, you did such an amazing job...

THAT'S WHAT HE ASKED FOR! The Blue Fairy from A.I. !

Lee said to me....

I handled the hat...looked closely at the carefully beautifully painted 'Blue Fairy'.
You know, I watched this movie just the other night..........i said

Who is this guy?

Lee...had just met him.
He couldn't tell me much.

I met Lee about a decade ago, have seen many of his custom hats.
Admired them, but........

This was an amazing paint job....little brushes...
He told me he had a hard time getting it into the inside of the hat.
The picture sent (Lee has never seen A.I.) was back lit and difficult to see.

Lee wasn't sure he had gotten it right.

I hugged him, and told him he had.
No one likes this movie but me.........I told him.

What an amazing hat.
I sat with Lee for two hours, I was supposed to leave.......
But I wanted to see the man who picked up this hat.

I couldn't wait any longer--I needed to meet Ben at "the other bar"
I walked out the door and ran--literally BUMPED into Bear.

barry_barry was walking in....he asked if I would join him for
a shot.

I agreed.

Walked back in.
Early Birthday shot...sure.

(You all saw this coming down main street)

Lee handed the hat to Bear.

Bear laughed..............
and handed it to me.

IT was MY hat.

Lee collapsed laughing....
Even HE didn't know.

Thank you Bear.
What an amazing present.

You didn't know I knew Lee...
Lee had no idea it was for me.

Austin is small and wonderful.

...and my heart is fresh.
*laughs*
so fresh......amazing what a good story will do for a gal.

Last year- (I dont think it was your birthday- I'm not sure WHAT was the occasion) I got you a straw cowboy-ish hat.

You hated it and gave it back to me.

But pish posh- enough about that.

THAT is an AWESOME story!

You should flesh it out and submit it to the Austin Chronicles annual short story contest. It is SO " ya cant make this up!" its awesome!

I've been waiting for you to tell the hat story so I could put this picture in with it...

Glad you like the hat. I have little moments of inspiration.
