Perfectly BRILLIANT Night at Work....

September 4th, 2006 (03:01 am)

I haven't had a night this good in ages, just ALL around.
Good energy, great great GREAT patrons...busy busy busy.

The nine hours FLEW by.
I couldn't believe it when I looked up and it was 1 AM.
I was on.

So many stories, I don't know where to begin.

But my favourite I guess was the little lady in scrubs...with thick glasses
who sat by herself at a 6 top booth inside because there was no more inside seating.
It seemed to make her look even more alone.

She appeared to have been through a very hard day.
She ordered a glass of Chardonnay, but after we discussed which one I thought she
would like more--I turned her onto a Pinot Grigio instead.

I had about ten or eleven tables at this point, stretching from one end of the restaurant
inside to the far end of the deck--but somehow you just know when
someone needs a little extra attention. I kept moving, but spun by repeatedly to chat
with and check on her and her veggie sandwich on wheat toast...

When another waiter finally came by to say she had flagged them for her bill...I printed
it up and ran it over to her--she stopped me as turned to speed away.

I just wanted to tell you--I used to wait tables when I was younger, and I know how
difficult a job it can be, but you make it look like so much fun. You have a way about
you that just puts people at ease. You make people feel comfortable.

(i had made HER feel comfortable...and this made me very happy.)

I beamed at her, thanked her...told her she had made my night.
And she had, she really had.
I had lots of big tippers tonight--but no one gave me as much as she did...with her 2$.

Moments like that remind me why I do what I do--and why I actually DO love it.

There was a bounce in my hustle for the rest of the evening--and I think I shared it with
all of my tables. Her words went a long long way.......she has no idea.

Being so busy your mind is pushed into a state of BIG PICTURE
and everything flows together with a thrum of complete coherency...

You are TOTALLY aware of your surroundings and each step you take
is projected through the moment into all the moments ahead.

That is being ON, that is the kind of satisfaction I crave like an high.
You are in the moment, and already 5 moments ahead.

I love the RUSH.

she has no idea.

I hate to argue, but since she used to wait tables...
I suspect she has a better idea than most.
