My JOB truly IS "Divine"!!!

April 5th, 2006 (06:02 pm)
current song: Black Betty

I love it, I just can't tell you how much I LOVE IT!!!

I went in for the ALL-STAFF meeting today, one of the many who dragged in on their
day off (*giggles* I have a day off) and sat for a SINGLE hour through a meeting that
was concise and informative and uplifting.

No really, I'm SERIOUS.
I have been doing this sort of thing for 17 or more years, and NEVER does an ALL-
STAFF meeting involve any of the above. I've never been to one that was less
than two to three hours at best--even if scheduled for 30 minutes.

Petty bitching from the staff, fights, long condescending lectures from the managers
and owners, and a shouting match between at least one of the waiters and cooks.

None of this happened.

Michael got up, owner of both Opal Divine's
and said what he came to say, with humour and a listening ear. Questions were asked
many were answered. Suggestions were given, all were appreciated.

I was beaming, looking around at about 30 twenty-somethings in their "Civies" inked
and gorgeous, smart and tuff, coooooool to every-last-head in the House.
These people can talk Scotch and sling beer...they run a line without cranked angst
between the front of the house and the back of the house.

These people are Austinites of the highest caliber.

The Kitchen Manager stood up, pointed out a few kinks in the system that need work,
and then thanked us all for doing a fantastic job. Then thanked each member
of his Kitchen Staff by name.
It had NONE of the feel of a "sandwich" speech.
As is taught in corporate realms of the food industry as a way to get folks to "listen?"
It was a man who loved what he did, where he did it
and who he did it with.

Respect. WOW.

No one wasted time, no one blew it off.
We walked away knowing what we needed to work on, and how. We walked away with
a sense of belonging to something. This Opal's turns a year old in a couple of weeks,
there are still glitches being worked out and changes being made--I feel like I walked
in at just the right time. I feel like I am part of a "Beginning" too.

I'm telling you, PEOPLE, this is unheard of.

chris2342, I won't stop thanking you for AGES.
