For the Record, My Thelonious Kicks Monster Butt

March 6th, 2006 (02:20 pm)
current song: It's not the Bullet That Kills You - It's the Hole, Laurie Anderson

What a Champ he was, his little 49 cc engine zipping along at speeds
that defy his maker--and thrill my heart.

Very important--for TODAY I had to ride North, way North.

All the way to:
AUSTIN , TX 78752

Oh sure...that's easy for YOU to say.
My apartment isn't even on the map provided,
I am so far South.

And baby, I am NOT freeway legal, not by a long shot.

But me an my Boy, we made it. My heart nearly flung out of my chest more times
than I care to think about, as I traversed the surface street Lamar all the way to
Airport where I could then make my way past Highland Mall and all the dodgy
intersections that lead up to the magnificent cluster FUCK that is IH-35.

We did good. We survived. I howled and hooted several times as we veered
out of the way of trucks hauling construction equipment, and blind motorists on cell
phones who didn't want to pull over when the Fire Truck raced passed...

Got a few nodding grins from several folks who passed me as I plugged along the
service road of IH-35, they were going 65mph and jumping on the freeway...

But finally, my street sign popped up and I took my turns.
I pulled up in front of the Austin Texas Social Security Office.

Cause ya see, Folks, Ginger Lynn Stevens does not have a valid Social Security Card.

And Ginger needs to sort this all out--she has finally found her Divorce Papers from
1992, and can get this all done. One more thing to make getting a REAL job, all the
more possible.

My Odometer read: 333.0 when I looked down at it.
I took this as a good sign.

I got my number, after helping the little old lady in front of me work out how to use the
computer to get her own...

I was A #111

Another sign...good good.

I waited a quick 60 minutes, thinking I would be there for at least 3 hours...
and greeted my Window Lady, (window #1 out of 28) with a smile and a
hearty HELLO.

Passed her my paperwork, and smiled expectantly.

She looked through it all....several times, and then uttered the dreaded words:

Is this all you have?

I had read everything I needed on the site, I HAD everything I needed, even MORE
than I needed...

Wh-why? What am I missing?

Well, this is a copy, I need a certified copy--and this doesn't have your birthdate
on it anyway...

Much discussion ensued. How to get a certified copy, and and even--because my
Window Lady was exceptionally cool--a jaunt to the back to pull up what she knew
was the new phone number and address of the Court in Riverside County Southern
California that I would need to contact.

I thanked her for all her help, and laughed a little..."Ginger does not go Legit To-Day."
She laughed too.
I grabbed my helmet and walked out the door into the sun.

Thwarted, but not dead.

I sat on the curb by Thelonious and smoked a cigarette,
thought about what I would need to do.

On a whim I tried the starter button that hasn't been working for ages
instead of kicking my Boy started... and he fired right up.

Thanks Thelonious, I needed that.
and home we rode.

I could find my way back with much easier streets--when you are looking for an
address, you gotta follow the directions. But free-range Ginger knows her way
around the surface streets quite well, even this far North.

We had fun on the way back.

I've made the calls, I am getting closer.
I need to print up some documents to fill in and mail off...
But--*LAUGHING HARD*--my printer died day before yesterday.

The web site says scary things like "may take up to 3 years"
but I am choosing to believe that does not pertain to my situation.

Get documents printed.
Mail documents with $13 money order...
wait for certified copy of Divorce.

Then I get to make the Journey again.
To get my Social Security Card...

To get me a JOB.

One victory at a time....
Today I learned what I need to do.

That is still SOMETHING.

*small sigh of repressed frustration*

Well, it ain't NOTHING!

I am in motion, and it feels good.

also, it snowed buckets up here yesterday and today. i am jealous of your warm weather. i want to go outside and sit on my front stoop and smoke a cigarette without having to worry about my teeth chattering so hard they'll bite my cigarette in half.

So, since you were already in the neighborhood of Highland Mall, I don't suppose you stopped in at the Small Business Development Center?

The Sisters

I hardly ever use it, but I used it recently and it was fine...
Needed it day before yesterday for something work related
and it was broke.

Barry confirmed it's time of death....*sigh*

I'm learning not to let these set backs destroy my will to live.

But yes, my flat is teeeeeny.
And my set up has very little room at all.

Thank-you, though.
So much.
