Call me Shallow, Call me Crazy...Call it Thursday?

October 20th, 2005 (11:25 pm)
current song: Somebody Saaaaaaaaave Me!

That show can cheer me out of just about any funk out there.

Arthur in his orange tank and baggy green swim trunks???
Arthur out of his orange tank...

love it.

Sure, it gave Lois something to rake him about, but I like it better when they don't
beat us over the head with the "Smallville Color Scheme" it's a given, I rather like just
grinning at--like Lex's purple shirts. WE GET IT.

But I'm just pickin' at nits...this episode rocked.

Doing a little back check, I was tickled to discover that Aquaman (introduced in 1941)
actually survived the '50s superhero decimation by hiding in the back pages of a comic
that was headlined by none other than: Superboy!

Arthur and Clark go waaaay back--in a sense.
I had no idea.

I love the writers...for doing their homework.
That's the reason I watch.
You can see half naked boys anywhere.....

"C'mon Superboy--With me in the surf and you on the turf,
we could stop this thing COLD!"

-Arthur to Clark, about Lex's new weapon...SMALLVILLE

I flinched at first at the Bro' spouting surfer lingo of our Arthur tonight...
but it makes sense in this Universe. And it was funny--especially to see
our hard assed little Lois get all twitterpated and flustered by a surf-jock.

(and how hot was Lois in that suit??? I fancy the boys, but even I 'felt a little funny
down there' when she strolled up--Arthur's repeatedly wet surfaces, however,
confirmed any questions I may have had about my heterosexual standing.)

But come ON Mr Welling, you are letting yourself go a bit...aren't you?
The flavour of the week shouldn't have a better washboard than Superboy.

"Stay super, Bro'"
-Arthur to Clark, as he leaves.

Lots of cool little details dropped.
Arthur's continuous thirst when out of water, Lois refilling his glass over and over.
That he's cold to the touch.
A very nice visual effect in the underwater fight scene with Clark, right out of the pages...
The wind up was PERFECT!

In fact all the swim scenes were done really well.
Someone stopped to think about the fact that Superboy would
metaphorically "swim straight"--
But Aquaboy wouldn't.
He's fishy.
He's nature--not Law.
(don't get me started on Superman as an alien god,
on a natural world...)

When they are seen by Lex as blurs, leaving the scene,
we know which streak is which.
Earlier, Arthur takes less than a direct path
past Lois, when they are racing in the water.

References to his Mother...nice.
And the Light House his "father" runs...nice.

after Arthur bests Lois in a swim contest...
Lois: Hey! How did you do that?
Arthur: Don't sweat it. I'm part fish.
::lifts her out of the water onto the pier::
Arthur: Hehe, no that was pretty good!
Lois: Lot's of practice, my swim teacher was a Navy SEAL.
Arthur: I swim with the seal's--they're awesome.
Lois: Your'e not a military brat are you?
Arthur: Na, just a brat.

When Lex has Arthur bound up on the table in the lab, (thank-you.) and is
torturing him with water deprivation...a vial of blood is drawn.
That's gotta come back to haunt.

Okay Fine, But why is Clark's new Professor filling the role he is now?

opening scene of the episode after the teaser
"Do you know where the greatest super computer in the world resides?
Right here."
::taps his own head::
"It's the human brain, yet we only use ten percent of it..."

(nice save!)

What's the angle?
This doesn't get him closer to Lex. To get the ship out?
Could he get the ship out any time he wants?
Does he know who Clark is?
He knows enough to get close to Clark.
I think this will be dragged out.
Brainiac isn't going to surface for some time.

In Lex/Clark fashion, the Prof will be a good guy for a while,
earn Clark's friendship with a few good deeds?

(Spike gets to play Watcher for a bit?)

Lex is full blown Lex now.
No--okay not quite FULL blown....
he is trying to convince himself that he is creating this weapon
to help the Country. To aide the CAUSE.
Part of his good side is still struggling, but the cause is indeed lost.

His actions are now consummately destructive.
He and Clark are going to come to face offs repeatedly now.
Clark has now stated aloud that Lex is not his buddy, not anymore...
It is, as they say, ON.

How much of what happened in the lab when Clark "flack-jacketed the C-4"
in front of Arthur...was caught on video? Is that what Lex was trying to clean up
on his lap-top when the dynamic duo strolled in?

I'm happy to see that the leeks are pretty 50/50 on accuracy...
What gets cut and re-written, what may have simply been a red herring...

Clark: Lex, do you ever stop and think about where your life is heading?
Lex: All the time. It's a complicated world Clark, only the naive view it
in black and white.

Clark: You know, the other day a Professor of mine, he accused Luthor Corp
of being evil, and you being just short of the devil.

Lex: Well you didn't tell him about my pitch fork, did you? ::smiles::
Clark: I defended you. ::John Williams' horn archs within theme music::
I guess I am naive.

A hot scene, yes.
But the best lines of the night go to:

Clark walks in to discover Arthur in his barn-loft-fortress-of-solitude
Arthur: You got some awesome stuff in here, Bro'
Clark: Yeah, I got the feeling the ocean floor is a little more interesting.
Arthur: And it'll stay that way now, thanks to you.
Clark: Well, I did have some help.
Arthur: We do make a pretty good team, huh? Maybe we should start
a up a Junior Lifeguard Association or something?

Clark: I'm not sure if I'm ready for the JLA just yet.

*rolls around giggling in blind glee*

Lost ends:

Chloe now knows that other people are out there who didn't get their abilities
from meteor rock. Clark told her about a boy who "kinda ran too fast for his own good".

We got our first solid glimpse into Lois Lane's psyche concerning people who don't
want to own a World, but save it...

Kal El as Professor Milton Fine's assistant?

Fine: If you've dropped my class, I hope you haven't come to apologise.
Clark: You were right. About Lex.
Fine: Of course I was. I'll never lie to you Mr Kent, after all--I'm an educator.
mm-Truth is my life's work.

Clark: It might be too late, but I was wondering if the research assistant
position was still available?

Fine: It is, but I'm not interested in hiring someone who changes their mind
as often as they change their clothes.

Yeah, our Clark is standing there, in his regular red T-shirt.
He hasn't changed clothes, yet--and takes the bait.
Any destiny but the one threatened by Jor El.

How does Fine know Clark is "the son of family farmers"?
Sure he saw his picture and his name....

Second best lines tonight:

Fine: Well, you know Groucho Marx said: "There's only one way to find out if a man is honest.
Ask him. If he says 'yes', he must be crooked".

Clark: I would think a college professor would be quoting Karl Marx, not Groucho.
Fine: German philosophy is easy, comedy is hard.

(That one's for YOU hairypolack)

And HOLY FUCK! We watched Lex torture our Arthur.
Big bad guy.
Done and Done.

Next week is the Halloween episode.
I hear we get Vampires.

Err.. to finish. Yeah, that line cracked me up. This is the first ep I've seen since season 3 began and I think I'm hooked.

Boy Of Steel

And here we are at season 4...
I'll get you hooked if I can.

After you filter out the WB goo,
they have some fine moments.
