Mama made Thelonious a MAN tonight!!!!!

September 19th, 2005 (04:24 am)
current song: Scary Monsters (& Super Creeps), Bowie

I took it easy, when Daniel followed me as I rode back South
to my place from his,
on the 10th of September.

That was about 25 miles, Thelonious' first mileage.
He was fresh out of the box.
I didn't even know his name.

Since then I have only taken him to the store, twice.
Never pushing him over 35 miles an hour.

Breaking him in slowly....
The juices working into his brand-new joints.
Filling into the cracks and stretching the muscles.

TONIGHT after he passed the 60 mile mark on his odometer...
I figured he was ready.

I had taken the service road along 71 to Congress Avenue,
after stopping at my Shell Station to check his tires and oil and make
sure everything was, you know, COOL.

I took Congress all the way up to 7th street, crossing the Congress bridge
was......nothing less than Bliss. The BIG Moon over my head reflected in the
river. *sigh* Wind in my face. A grin, cracking my head in two. ^_^
I took 7th to Redriver, and cruised past BEERLAND...
A busy Sunday night, lines outside Elysium and Beerland--but I was just here to
cruise. Turned him back and headed towards 6th.

There was a space in front of Casino El Camino. I pulled in and parked.
Walked in, removing my cat eyed goggles and shiny black half helmet.
The door guy squinted at me in mock unrecogniton and then laughed.
I KNOW I KNOW, I haven't been in in a while...
He nodded.
I pointed out the door to Thelonious: Look what I got for my Birthday!!!

"Niiiiice colours! I got a shirt and a pair of shorts." He grinned. I entered.

It was strange.
It smelled.....like burgers.
The air was so clear.

I walked into the bar, like a dark dream, everything felt different.
The energy, was...different.
I recognised no one who was not behind the bar.
It was surreal.

I opened the back door to the patio, and had to step back.
AN OPEN AIR PATIO was so filled with smoke that it entered the building.
I shook my head, and laughed...walked out through the smog
to the fountain, and looked around.

My People.

Waves and nods, and I was satisfied.
Casino's was safe--for now.
The BAN hadn't busted the patio yet.
It is being overlooked.

I strolled out swinging my helmet.

(Ginger does not drink a drop,
when she is out with Thelonious.

He seemed glad to see me back so quickly.
Each time I start him now he responds more easily.
We cruised up 6th. Past old haunts.
I felt like I was giving him the tour.

I turned North onto Congress, the Capitol building glowing pink
in front of us. He rumbled under me, and we hung a left and then
a right onto Lavaca. A Roller started up and followed us.
My heart thumped in my chest. Our plates aren't exaaaactly kosher yet.

The black&white pulled along side us, and I chose to go with my gut.
I looked over at the driver and beamed, and gave him a nod.
My head heavy with helmet.
He smiled, and nodded back, and drove away.

We took Lavaca past the Texas Chili Parlor...to MLK, and then hung right,
onto Guadalupe. The UT Campus Drag. Coeds strolling about. The Tower,
the coffee houses and book stores and bars....

Passed Toy Joy and Wheatsville Co-op, the Austin Ballet....
The Drag turns into Lamar.

As I said. He had passed his 60 mile mark on his Odometer by now.
I had been waiting, until he was ready...

I opened him up.
45....holy shit. I've had 49 cc bikes before but they couldn't...

I let him wind back down.
He wasn't done.
But my heart was POUNDING!!!!

We were going somewhere important.
Somewhere I really only get to go to a couple times a year,
when the opportunity arises as I am spending the day with a friend
who drives.

We took North Lamar all the way to Airport, and turned into the darkened
parking lot of our destination.
I knew it would be closed.
I just wanted to GO there.
To realise that I COULD GO THERE NOW
any time I wanted to.

I smiled up at the Hangul sign.
My favourite Asian grocery store in Austin.
CM pales beneath it.
You can buy live fish.
Fresh omochi.

Thelonious and I took a couple turns around the empty parking lot.
Then headed back South.

North Lamar winding all the way back...empty, late on a Sunday night.
I wanted to go somewhere else.
Thelonious agreed, it would be fun.
Coltrane was playing on my shuffle, we went a little faster than we needed to.
It was fun.
I leaned into the turns....

Anticipating our destination.

Redbud Trail, off Lake Austin Blvd.
The slinkiest road I know, up and down hills and across the water.
The moon was high, and bright.

I hit the hi-beams and we opened up,
I know he's just a little Scooter--but the boy has PEP!!!
LEAN into the left
LEAN into the right!!!!

We crested, atop Westlake Hills.
A dangerous area.
The rich-people live here.

But I knew the best part was going to be
going BACK down.

You see, when you go BACK,
you are FACING the City.
Coming down the highest, curviest, road in Town.

She is open, glittering with what looked like twice the lights
she wore the last time I straddled a bike on this hill.... 10 years ago.

I think I teared up, maybe it was the dust.
We took it, slowly.
It was so beautiful.
The Moon...the Frost Tower
and all the other new skyscrapers and buildings
alive with light.

My Austin.

I love Her so.

We zoomed across the bridge,
the cool air
from the water
like a startled gasp of surprised joy.

I am sure...it was the dust, I wiped my eyes under my goggles.
Bugs in my grin.

We took a left and parked by Mozart's Roasters.
The place I ran and roasted for 11 years ago.

And where Hula Hut serves a mean Grass Skirt...

I got off and looked Thelonious over, I um....
I petted him.
He was juuuuuuust fine.

I climbed back on and we headed back into Town.
(The lights had gotten to me)
5th street all the way to Redriver.

This time when I cruised slowly by, Casino and his gal Niki
were standing outside.
I pulled in. I hollared Casino! Look what
I got for my Birthday!!!

He turned
and laughed loudly.
I think I am probably a silly sight, in my jeans and beater and band-pin
encrusted Levis' jacket--astride this wonderful creature in my goggles
and half helmet.

He walked over with the gang, they were playing tonight.
And gave my boy the once-over, approvingly.

Niki and another boy stuck around, and smoked a cigarette
(shaddup--I haven't had one in like a WEEEK!!! )
with me while I rambled about the last few weeks.

Niki is famous for being able to engulf a conversation, so I left
her to a long and winding tale--but the boy she was with kept trying
to say something to me.

I finally broke through her story, and he was able to say:
I--I know you. I know you....

I was expecting the token "from somewhere"
when he floored me.

7 years ago I, I picked you up in the rain! It was pouring, I was new in Town,
had just moved here, and I saw you. I've always thought it was my TEST, of Austin.
I saw you walking without an umbrella, and it was just POURING...

I am staring.
"I remember this."
I say.
He continues.

Your face, you look the same! *he laughs*
Is staring at me.
And when I pulled over, I was afraid to pull over, but you didn't even
have an umbrella...
he repeats.

When I pulled over and asked you if you needed a ride, I was in my jeep--
I had a crew cut then, and muscles....

I am grinning at the mop haired boy with lean arms and horned rimmed glasses,
T-shirt, jeans and Chuck's.

I guess I don't look the same anymore...

he continued....

You just jumped in and said: COOL!
I knew I was where I would, I knew I would,
like it here.

he finished.

"I was living at 24 flats then, huh?"

I don't remember...I only lived in that part of Town for a little while...
I just, I dunno,
I always remembered you.

The band was about to start, Niki was heading toward the door,
I made sure
I knew his name.

I hopped back on my Thelonious, and told Corey
I was verrrry happy to have met
him again.

I may not have done it, well enough.

But he nodded and smiled.
Walked into the venue.

That was enough.
For me.
My heart was too full.

Anything more could only take away from tonight.

We drove home.

Back down Congress--heading South this time,
back across the bridge with the Big Moon.
My cheeks flushed with wind burn now,
so much better than fever.

Back along the service road of 71.
Right, on Victory Drive.

(hell, YEAH.)

To Fountainhead.

We took a turn around the complex,
I drove in
through the out door.

And parked Thelonious.

Pulled my key out, and hit the button that makes it
switch-blade into the little contraption that also holds
the alarm and remote start button.

*laughing and laughing and laughing*

I stood back and just stared at him.
Checked out his bits.

Opened his seat, to take out
To take out his shiny silver cover.

I want to know him inside and out.
I want to learn to care for him, fix him.
I will.

I covered him, like a restless golden bird.
I pushed the button on my key that makes him beep
at me--and open a red winking eye.

If anyone touches him, he will scream.
I will come and save him.
I will.
He has saved me.

I climbed the stairs to the third floor.
I climbed the stares, back to my Life.

The Sisters looking on.

Two Friends have given me gifts on my Birthday,
that are indescribable.
Scribe as I may...

Gifts that were not the object, but the places
those objects allowed me to live in.
To be Alive.

zutroy gave me my Cassandra.
Last year.
She connects me to the world of my mind.
She connects me to a Universe I cannot touch
but cannot imagine living without.
A world that connects all worlds.

eastland gave me my Thelonious.
This year.
He connects me with my world of flesh.
Of road, and sky.
Of rice and water.

I will wake up every morning now, and seek to be
the Friend who deserves
these gifts.

Thank-you, Gentlemen.
Birthdays are for Celebrating Life.

You've given mine back to me.
Both of you, together.

Both of you... I met
because of Livejournal.

*shakes head grinning*

So many doors.

I forgot.....
Thelonious is at 100.6 miles now,
on his Odometer.

He's juuuust resting before empty.

Thelonious holds 1.3 gallons.

The BAN hadn't busted the patio yet.
It is being overlooked.

Ooh, your ban covers patios, too? Geez, the ban up here has been a boon for builders of patios and sidewalk cafes. It's too bad, because now outside can be super smoky, which is funny.

I went to the casino on Friday night, and while they have a large non-smoking slot and blackjack area, the rest of the place smelled like a Reverend Horton Heat show. They even have ashtrays in the bathroom stalls.

Folks reaaaaaaaaaaaally didn't understand what they were voting for.
I don't think that many Texans would have done what they did if they had.

But it looks like the cops are turning a bit of a blind eye to the patio for now.

Lovejoys already reports a substantial drop in sales.
See, they don't HAVE a patio.
Nor does beerland.

Reverend Horton Heat show....
I luv you!!!
