Hummana Hummana...

August 11th, 2005 (10:54 pm)
current song: The Sun Goes Down And The World Goes Dancing

I've never had a job that wasn't LITERAL.

More accurately described, I've never had a job that wasn't PHYSICAL.
Tangible.

Held in my hands.

I'm thinking about that suddenly.
As I look for a new one.

My Friend who drove me to that nebulous spot today, to see
if I could front my feathers and talk the talk and score another gig
as I recognised the patterns of the lay-out and the machines in the back....

He does something on a machine like this one.
He can do it in his pajamas.

He can do it here,
He can do it there.

He can do it with a fox,
Hell yeah, he can do it in a box.

I ask him what he does all the time.
He tells me...and I try to smile with some semblance of recognition in my eyes.

Then I laugh; and we talk about cartoons, comics, food--or TREES.

I like to talk about and to, TREES.
So does he.

I used to worry about what my parents thought about me,
because I did not embrace their god.

All of us have outgrown that part.

Now they are worried that I have only learned a skill
that will be lost, when I cannot make my knees and shoulders
do it anymore.

That inexplicably, they have raised a Grasshopper.
I've only taught myself to live for Today.

She has no children or husband, doesn't even want them......who will take care of her?
She has no insurance, no savings?

And the SHE wonders what they must think about...how will I take care of THEM?

*counts her toes, over and over*

Ten fingers, Ten toes, Healthy.
I was a good kid, once.

The First Daughter. Bright and Strong.
Spoke early, read early.....
carried a book-like piece of junk mail around
that she scribbled crayons into
and called her "Diary"
before she could write words.

I look up at the sky-scrapers that now inhabit my City.
Bright lights in the windows late into the night.
I always wonder.........what PAPER-WORK is?

I've catered most of those buildings.
Brought them food, and listened to their stories.

(I am not ashamed of my work.
My work, is older than the oldest profession.
Argue if you want--Food cums first.
)

I'm still excited by what I do......
when I have a chance to do it well, even
BRINGING something to someone satisfies me.

In that moment, I know all of those folks
in the rooms
that light the towers around me
cannot imagine
what I do.

Cannot know the immediacy of the Theatre.

Work.

What is work?

It is what you do for a living.

How can LIVING be anything but day to day?

I love the motions of a routine, when I can come and sweep through
a day.....with a pattern that is familiar. Amongst familiar people.
Sweat, and lift, and scrub, and flip, and slice and pour.

Walk away in the end with something done. Done well.
And maybe even your name on the lips of those who were there,
and consumed the efforts of your work.

I could have learned how to build houses, if the skein had shifted to the left or right.
But it didn't.
I didn't.

I learned how to do THIS.
And THIS is vast.

If I perfect it..........like a figure-skater
When my knees give out, I can teach it.

I've learned how to write with those crayons.

Mmmmmmmmm.........Paper-work.

(I had no idea where this was going when I began,
I'm glad it wound back around....
it has a way of doing that here, doesn't it.)

those who can, do. those who can't, teach. those who do well, lead soon enough.

As literal as my job can be at times...

Even catching Evildoers takes lots and lots of paperwork.

(wonders how many times that idea has been used in comics)

vocation

frederick buechner once defined vocation as being where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need.

and i don't think he meant it in an "everyone win a nobel peace prize someday" kind of way.

you feed.
you serve.
you take good care of the paperwork people who sometimes don't get a moment's human connection in a day.

these are your investments. your portfolio is strong.

you have not failed your life.
provision has always come.

i don't think you live for today irresponsibly.
i think that you live for today mindfully.

it's a fine line.
folly.
wisdom.

you are door number two, my friend.

/one foot in front of the other, yes?

He can do it in his pajamas.

G-

You're so close to being able to do the same.
You have everything literally in your hand to land a similar gig.
You don't even have to do much more than you already do today.
You simply have to want this.
Believe.

There's a window of opportunity out there for bloggers and podcasters with your rare talents to work in their pj's, be there own boss, set their own hours, and soooooo many other perks.

You're so close to that pajama job if you want it.

If I offered to fly you up for a weekend to really discuss this would you take me up.

Perhaps a phone call frist?
*Smiles*
I am at that crucial part of the magic,
where I have rent for next month socked away,
and 25 dollars to my name.

I gotta booogie-Ooogie-Ooogie and find something,
ANYTHING
if only for the moment!

^_^

The next few weeks are critical!
