Monday Monday Monday!

August 9th, 2005 (01:39 pm)

I had way too much fun-time yesterday...

Waking early and making a trip to CM for groceries--
carefully using some of my Derby-Dough to restock the larder.
I ran around with my Shuffle in my iEars, singing along with The Ramones
and poking through produce. Walked back before the heat set in, with a canvas
bag of goodies over my shoulder.

Though plans for lunch with a Friend of mine from Houston had fallen through,
(NO worries K, we will totally get together when you are free again--
but I STILL WANT TO MEET YOUR BOY! I've heard so much about him,
and you are one of the FEW people I know whom I champion for reproducing....
Thank god someone is making a dent in the tragic gene pool out there.)

I got a call from eastland, to join him for an early dinner!
(Hurray for out-of-Town-Friends who want to feed me!!!)

I spent the afternoon filling out applications, and picking through various leads...
And then got whisked away by Daniel-Tiger, to The Hula Hut!

(a bit like having dinner in your favourite episode of Gilligan's Island...
There is a time and place for this level of kitsch, this was the time--
that was the place! )

We sat on the water, watching the storm roll in--Harassing our waiter 'Nate'--
and eating "Mexonesian". Daniel had two INCREDIBLY MANLY beverages
called Grass-Skirts........and I broke character and had a margarita or two.

My giggling mantra through-out the meal was: oh god, Nate HATES me!

I was the gal I once hated waiting on (see: early twenties?).
Took too long to order, he hit the table three times before I finally looked at the menu...
I was on Daniel's cell phone when he came by at one point....
(I KNOW!!! @_@)
Then once I HAD my food, I wouldn't let him take the plate away....
(Yeah--we CAMPED...and talked and laughed and enjoyed ourselves--CRIMINAL!)
I'm a slow eater.
Shoot me.

I'm always torn when I eat out--The part that wants to FULLY enjoy the experience,
and the part that KNOWS what's going through the mind of the person
refilling my water over-and-over.

We were Nate's last table...it was just before 6 PM.
WE HAD TO BE HIS LAST TABLE, that's when shifts have turned over
and it was a Monday, and the place was empty.

But the wind was blowing off the lake, and the sky was growing dark with
gorgeous clouds....and we had NAMED the two grackles (small Austin crows)
who were eyeing us for a chance to get at our plates as well....

And sometimes I stop being a waiter, and just let myself enjoy myself.
I was in extremely Good Company.

As we left and walked up the hill to the car, Daniel cut me short as I began to rave
about how much Nate-Hates-Me--by laughing and saying: Don't you worry Ginger,
Nate was taken care of.

Of course he was.

We drove back to my place, and picked up two enormous mesh bags of laundry,
and a stack of jeans that should SHAME me.

A marathon of Tenacious D and Aqua Teen Hunger Force
ensued after, at the apartment he maintains with a COOL ROOMMATE here
in Austin, while he works in NC.

(Honestly--I really should learn more about this "WORKING W/COMPUTERS"

Much guffawing and 4 HUGE loads of laundry, also happened.

(to my small credit, I cleared a bit of the bachelor-apartment-ness
from their living space, but that comes more from my uncontrollable need to BUS
than any kindness Intentionally returned. I wanted to do it myself,
but Daniel joined in. We cleaned out the refrigerator before it was all over.
Boys are so cute.
Did you know if you leave Jello
in an uncovered bowl in a frost free frige long enough--it turns into stained-glass?
BLACK CHERRY stained glass!)

I love Daniel-Tiger. I love him for so many reasons........

He reads his fortune in the morning with Flintstone's Vitamins.
His own Runes.
His own formula,
wildly accurate.

He has a GIR blanket on his couch.

He looks back on a little Service Industry job he held briefly between
Gigs-in-His-Field, more than Fondly. Speaks of it still, with strange reverence.

He builds a MEAN fort.

He doesn't want to part with his 11 year old car, despite mechanical difficulties,
because it has sentimental value.

He knows all the words to THE LAND OF THE LOST theme song.

And when we were driving back home to my place, with piles of clean laundry....
And I got in a funk and began describing why I was having such a hard time with
my up-coming 35th birthday (Culturally, I have achieved NOTHING that I am supposed
to have achieved by now--no degree, no life-partner, no children, no car, no house,
no bank account, no career--not even a JOB to speak of!) He said this:

I think we are at the tail end
of the generations from whom much of that will be expected.
Ginger, I don't have a lot of those things. The important question is--
Would you have a good Irish Wake?

(he and I both laughed loudly)
Ginger, you would have an AMAZING Irish Wake.

The car was silent for a few moments.
360 spinning under the wheels of his rented vehicle,
towards my tiny flat on Victory Drive, South Austin.

"a man is known by his friends."

I thanked my Daniel-tiger.
I thanked him for being my Friend.

Oh, all the comrades e'er I had, they're sorry for my going away.
And all the sweethearts e'er I had, they'd wished me one more day to stay.
But since it falls unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call, Goodnight and joy be with you all.

You leave me speechless.

Thank you for the magic.

Daniel Tiger, you ARE the magic.
