The Gratuitous Ellipsis.....

July 12th, 2005 (04:54 pm)

http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/marks/ellipsis.htm

I do so adore...the gratuitous ellipsis.

*sigh*

An LJ Friend just expressed
her disdain
for such behavior
in a brief post.

I cringed and laughed.

Couldn't possibly be MORE guilty....

I was reminded of when I was in the 10th grade, and we did a production of
Up the Down Staircase at KAHS, in 1986.

(I had a tiny role as Helen Arbuzzi, the drop-out,
with just enough lines to make me feel cool.
My first SPEAKING role!)

But the boy I had a crush on, Christopher Carter Whatley, had a lead
as Paul Barringer, One of the Teachers.

In my favourite scene, he crushes the heart of a student he had hoped to
calmly diffuse. She had sent him a love letter. He decided the best way to
deal with this--was to treat is as an assignment.

He corrected Alice's love letter.

In this scene:

ALICE (as she precedes PAUL out the classroom door
into the area to L). Yes, Mr.----(Stops herself, and starts to say "Paul," but she
doesn't quite dare. Her hope is growing.)
You want to talk about my letter?

PAUL (nodding). And make a few corrections.

ALICE (bewildered). Corrections?

PAUL (nodding again; professionally.) You use a series of dots instead of
punctuation. Let's see, now. (Reads quickly and without expression.)
Dear Mr. Barringer, Last Sunday I took the subway to your stop--insert comma--
having looked it up on your time card dot dot dot. I hope you don't mind the
presumption. (Looks up.) That's misspelled. (ALICE swallows with difficulty.
This isn't what she expected. He continues rapidly and without expression.)
I walked back and forth across the street from you house--insert comma--back and
forth--insert comma--and my heart was throbbing with this love I bear for you
dot dot dot. (Looks up again.) "Throbbing" is a cliche'. (ALICE is too disturbed
to speak. He continues, as before.) I think of you all the time dot dot dot. I pray to be
worthy of you. (ALICE is stunned and mute.) And if ever you need me to die
for you, I will gladly do so dot dot dot. (ALICE starts slowly L. Unconscious of
this, he continues.) I feel so deeply the truth and beauty--cliche's, no need to
capitalize. But I have to speak out this love I feel dot dot dot dot--(He looks up to see
her going. Speaking after her.) There are some repetitions here and a change of tense,
along with ----(But she's gone. He looks after her with a moment of concern, then
shrugs and goes back in Sylvia's classroom.)

It was my favourite scene...because Chris had received manymanymany love letters
from me. Heavy, with dot dot dot.

Words CAPITALIZED, irrationally.

Bad poetry, too.

All typed.
All ignored.

Every time I saw him do that scene...It was to me. For me.
And I decided
Then
To keep my DOT DOT DOTs.

(Yes, of course I still have the script.)

While transposing the lines from the Play,
it was difficult for me
not to make them easier to read.
Give spaces
and change the shape of the letters.

But the script was published with type-writer text....So I left it.

It's not MY Love Letter.

THIS......................

THIS, is my Love Letter.

And for every breath I take, for every pause when I look up and around, for every
cliche' I spout IN BOLD LETTERS.......I will show my own direction.

Up the Down Staircase.

Not available for correction.

AND SO CLEVER YOU ARE!!!

I wasn't responding to YOU--but the idea.
You said it--

And made me dig up an old piece of myself....

I enjoyed the dig.

If I was posting this for ANYONE
it was for disophy1.

HE wants to correct my love letter.

Please, note?
I laughed as I cringed...when I read what you wrote.

You reminded me.
Thank-you.

OMG *ow* I remember, in high school, sending a teacher a love letter. And when she talked to me about it, I asked her what she thought of it and she said, "I thought it was extremely well written, the way you said so much and weren't explicit."

She's not even an English teacher!
