"Carefully, Carefully, Carefully, L-Y..."

September 6th, 2008 (10:22 pm)

Pictured in the ancient ICON present, made by my dear Jillian, is my first computer.
A Toshiba laptop my Folks gave me for my 30th birthday...(2000)
I believe Pop's words were: Ginger, please join the Universe?!

I called him MAX, and then PETER...(he got his soul swapped out at a point)
I listened to his hard drive grind out that clicking sound and stop...
I remember Stan asking me--Is there anything really important I should try and dig out?

"What do you mean?"

I mean are there files or, you know, is there anything really important saved?

Ginger ponders this for a moment.

"No, I wrote everyone's email address down in my journal (paper)."

But the files?

"I have them in there--> (points at literal grey filing cabinet she inherited from her
late paternal Grandfather
) I printed everything up!"

Stan does a head to palm plant.
And replaces my hard drive.

I hadn't learned that things could be saved, how to save them, or in fact...to trust
such a flimsy idea as a place to save ANYTHING.

I have fallen far since then.

Max died, and then....Peter--petered out.
He wasn't entirely in the bucket when my dear, Dear, Dearest
Showed up on my steps with a birthday present that terrified and thrilled me:

My Mac.
My Girl.
I wouldn't touch her for ages...had to get up the nerve.
She was different from the PC, he had made everything so trying...
I had learned slowly to use him, but with her it all looked different and was scary.

Then I moved a picture.
You are kidding me???

Sold American.
I drank the Kool-aid.
She changed my whole experience of the internet and all its glories.

Cassandra is very ill now.
She was born in 2001, a loverly little PowerBook G4...
She was someone else's girl before she was mine, and I have been putting
a bit too much pressure on her of late.

I keep crashing her, I mean I think I crashed her...I got a blue screen one night
that I rolled over to out of sleep...
she had been playing too much Hulu I am afraid.

She makes an insect noise now every time I turn her on.
My Cassandra.
She is going to die soon.

I feel it.

This time?
I have my whole Universe inside her.

Such is the way of Cassandra........

Nearly, only a name.

*head in tired hands*

is why I haven't been around.
I am afraid she will die
every time I turn her on.

Oh hon that's terrible. I have my fingers crossed that she'll keep going as long as you need her.

I think you should back the files up sooner rather than later.

I might be able to help you with that.

But it sounds like you're in need of a birthday present.

I am socking money slowly away,
been difficult over the summer for ends to meet
but fall is always better for business...

I should have it by January if I can keep Cassandra

(may very well need your help in the back-up department...when are you free?)

Oh no. Please take care of your friend and the memories she has in her (positronic?) brain. And many chuckles for the Tom Lehrer title. Bless The Electric Company!

Ginger, I hope that you can get some help with the laptop locally. I would love to be able to help out in any way possible...
For now, fingers are crossed for you and Cassandra.
