Up Up and Away!

January 20th, 2008 (02:09 pm)

Sunday afternoon....

DT left to run his bi-monthly Babylon5 game a few hours ago,
with plans perhaps to have dinner with a friend he hasn't seen in some time
later this evening.

I rolled over in the pile of fluffy blankets on his couch and opted to give myself a
good lie down--and let myself sleep in. Somehow success allows one this privilege.
No guilt, no sadness, no self-disdain... I have been working hard and saving money.
I have been a very good girl.

I've since slipped my copy of 'Superman Returns' into the DVD player for background...
secured DTs deluxe hardcover copy of MARVELS
dedicated to Jack Kirby
and signed by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross themselves...

and opened a bottle of Bass Ale.

My own brand of a lazy day, happily awash in my favourite layers of dorkdom.

I have tomorrow off as well, but there are things to be taken care of on a Monday, things
that Sundays simply do not allow. The MAPS offices will be open and I can wrap up
the paper-work details needed to re-secure my status so that my MRI (hopefully my last
visit to the white coats for a long long time) will be covered on Thursday.
And a visit to the Social Security office as well, to take my final paper-work
proving that i am in fact who I claim to be,
and not the name they still have on record from a 16 year old divorce. *sigh*

Yes, tomorrow I must deal with the government. The Man. The Mundane Horrors...

But not Today.
No--it is simply Sunday. Everything is closed. The air is cold and clear and the sun is
high and streaking through the balcony windows. I am home alone, my responsibilities
as an adult...have been taken care of for the week.

I am all about fuzzy slippers and boys in capes today.

I allowed myself an unnecessary purchase Friday afternoon, a little trip to *coughs*
Dragon's Lair... I'd heard about a short series of comic books a while ago
that I really wanted to read. So for the first time in a long time
I spent just over $15 on something ridiculous that wasn't food or a movie.
A trade copy of #1-6 of a Marvel series called POWERLESS.

It was exactly what I needed. Friday afternoon--another day off, but one spent mostly
running errands, I ended it with a little dinner using my "Funny Money" award I had
gotten from work for my high sales. (like a gift certificate awarded for various reasons
for outstanding this-or-that. heh. I've won, four of my last eight shifts. You can spend it
at any of the three Opal's locations) I chose to sit at the bar at the North 'Marina' store
and read my new book.

I was AMAZED by how many people came up to me, men--handsome men, in business
casual...*laughing* who wanted to know what I was reading. I suppose considering the
fact that I am in the DELL hub of the Universe up here in North Austin, I shouldn't be
surprised that most of the 30 something ilk, with their wives, kids, dogs and two SUV
garages also still have......a comic book box or two under the bed or 'in the closet'.

Despite my many interruptions, I got through it--though not without
a couple of business cards being passed to me. *howling laughter*

We live in the future now, as DT is fond of saying. The geeks have inherited the world
at last.

POWERLESS is based on the premiss that none of our familiar heroes (Spiderman,
Wolverine, DareDevil etc) ever inherited their superpowers. They live in a work-a-day
world... the narrator is their psychiatrist. Only this Doctor found himself waking up in a
hospital after having been in a coma for three days. Found with a head injury outside
his home... a lingering sense of deja vu as he speaks with these folks. A sense that he
is not in fact IN the real world any longer. He has flashes of them, in strange costumes.

an attractive idea to this little girl still rubbing at the holes in her own head, fingering
the soft spots all too often.

I too am back from my sleep--awake, and without the dread of my POWERLESS
protagonist. Happy to be a waitress again, one of the best, and a good friend with good
friends. The world in fact feels quite full of heroes and magikal things.

*wiggles her toes in her fuzzy slippers*

And I have the whole day off.
