To Begin Again.

January 7th, 2008 (01:48 pm)

I started working again on Thursday.
I logged onto HotSchedules and picked up my first shift.

I was terrified...a nameless sort of fear.
Could I still do it? Could I stand that long--it has been 4 months now.
I am flaccid and wobbly and get so tired so fast.
Cannot always think straight, remember things?

But it was a lunch shift, a short one, and it was slow.
Only three hours on the floor. I made it through it just fine.

So when I got home, I picked up another lunch shift for Friday...

A longer one, a better one--the day before, fueling my confidence.
Friday was brilliant.

A young hipster couple were seated early, it took me a moment or two longer
to get to them than I would have liked. Still getting my rhythm back,
only had three tables, but at three of the far corners of the restaurant and huge deck...
(winter means nothing in Austin--Sunny and 70 degrees)

So I greeted them with an: i really hope you haven't been waiting long?
They assured me they hadn't and asked about our bloody marys--any good?

The vodka is an infusion, steeped on poblano peppers, sundried tomatoes
and elephant garlic, and the bloody mary mix is made from scratch here as well,
even before I worked here two years ago I would go by the 6th street Opals for one
when I really needed a proper bloody mary. They actually are the best in town.

They ordered two, and burgers on whole wheat buns with cracked pepper fries.
I spun through my loop, and deposited them with flourish and waited for the response.

"oh god, these are fantastic!!!"
Excellent! i said--and scooted off to get to new tables,
touch base with others.

I had an 8 top inside of business folk, arriving in staggered intervals,
they were seated near the wait station and front door.
Chef was passing out tastes of new menu items
my big table got the best of it all. They ordered everything. I kept the cocktails coming.

But every time the door opened and another employee came in and saw me?
*laughing happily*
There was a mad attack of hugs and how are you's and more hugs....

As I was again attacked by one of my favourite cooks, while placing plates from the
newly arrived tray of goodies on my tray-jack--I turned and explained to the table,
who must have thought that this was a VERY friendly bunch of employees--that I had
been away for 4 months recovering from a little brain surgery.

The whole table cheered me, and the host of the party told me she thought I was
"just doing an amazing job."

And so it went, on and on, an easy little fruitful Friday happy hour shift....

The adorable hipster boys on the deck left me a card from "Joie de Vie"
after one had complemented my hair, he's a stylist...

I told him how WONDERFUL that made me feel, as I was growing it back in
from having it shaved to the scalp in September for surgery
and was only nicking at the spit curls and around my ears at this point...

So I get a special hair-cut from one of the best Salons in town when I want it?
They left a fully filled out comment card extolling my virtues as a waitress...
and a huge tip.

I came home after eight hours on my feet--exhausted. But happy.
I logged on and looked at the next shift available...
Saturday night, 6th cut?

Could I do it???

I decided to try.

It was murder. I was there from 5PM to 2:30AM.
Slow slow slow all day and evening--until every one but me and the closer
were cut. Then they hit us.
In the end I was getting leg cramps and wanting to collapse.

Aching and confused.

But enough happened, enough went well, enough STORIES...

I want to tell them all, but this already requires an LJ cut.
I won't cut it though...out of sheer delight that I should.

I have something to say again.
I have stories.

Izzie, the new cook in the kitchen explaining loudly from his tattooed throat, beneath
his autumn coloured dreds: Yah! I set my alarm to a christian rock station,
nothing else makes me angry enough to wake up!

And it's just a spin through the kitchen, on the way back to the floor....
but I keep the little sound bite, for later.
For here.

i missed it.
i have missed it so.

Seventh year here...
I started my first ever Livejournal post with: To Begin Again

And so I shall.

So I shall.

I've had sunday and monday off.
Tuesday I start my schedule for real.
I am actually ON the schedule, not 'picking them up'

I'm back.

I'm picking up shifts at Penn Field (South Congress)
It was just easier on my nerves to start back where I'm from.
Though driving 40 miles a day on MoPac is a bitch!

I try and get some pics, I have no idea where my camera is...
