Question?

December 21st, 2006 (04:36 pm)

When did we stop drinking hot coffee out of pint glasses?

I mean, it was weird enough that it was thought to be a good idea at all...
And having been in and out of the "Coffee Biz" for years, I have a hard time
remembering exactly where in the time-line what of the "culture" evolved.

I am speaking as an Austinite--and they may well still be pouring lattes into
beer glass-ware in Portland. I don't know.

When I was running the poetry readings (SNICKER AWAY--I WAS 20) at The Fleur
de Lis
coffee house in Redlands SoCal....we were "French County" and owned by
two men who thought that everything required a saucer and a small matching spoon.
(circa 1990)

When I started at CARLO for COFFEE (also owned by two men...actually MOST of the
coffee houses I worked at were owned by two men...who argued a lot. *grin*) we went
the way of LARGE MUGS, Austin casual.
(circa 1992)

When INSOMNIA (now METRO) on the UT Drag opened, I was their grave shift
manager and a stack of pint glasses served nearly ALL of our bevies...
(circa 1993)

When I started roasting at MOZART'S in 1994...we thought of ourselves as SERIOUS
coffee people--and avoided the trend of the Campus coffee shops that were embracing
the coffee Renaissance via Seattle. Civilised cups, but no saucers.

And my YEAR of hell as a STARBUCKS manager taught me everything was about
paper cups...with ridiculous names for their sizes.
(circa 2004)

But I just poured a big ole pint of house brew...into a Lovejoys glass and realised I had
not seen coffee served in one in many many years. When did that stop?

All my favourite little places have mugs, cups--mismatched cups from thriftstores pretty
much tell me I am in a place with soul....(Rock On--Bouldin Creek!)

But pint glasses?
No handles makes them easy to buss, stack, clean...
They are cheap.
A bit hot at first--but the glass is thick enough to be reasonably insulating.

Just a flash back--me a bit left of center today.
Well, it is Thursday.

What's YOUR coffee scene like?

Ah...so I am simply not getting out enough.
(that place is great--I used to live around the corner!)

I go both ways...usually a mug.
But today--I dunno. I got nostalgic.

too cool

I don't think I've ever had coffee in a pint glass.

I don't feel cool at all :(

All the coffee places by me blow because all of the poser punk kids go there.

Fucking wankers.

I stick to brewing my own brew.

The Fleur de Lis coffee house in Redlands

*dies*

I used to go there after dance class. Years later, I would work there when it became Redlands Coffee & Tea Co.

Oooh--and the antique bookstore next door...
with the hot but slightly creepy Euro-Trash Dude???

I was 20, he was 40 and always plying me with cool books
and asking me to come over for dinner at his place...

WOW.
I haven't thought about all this in YEARS.

No pint glasses here, although that does sound like a wonderful way to drink it.

By the way, I'm having something delivered to your place. So if something shows up that makes you think of me, odds are I had it sent.

Sublime Solstice!

barry surf sit

Karma Kafe in Denton used to serve theirs in tallish glass mugs with handles. Straight sides. I always kind of dislike coffee in pint glasses. The cream swirls around in just the wrong way, and I always feel like I'm going to drop it, even though I almost never drop them when filled with beer. *shrug* I think it's something to do with it being hot, and my natural reaction to want to open my hand when something is hot.

I'm excited about my Irish Coffee under the Golden Gate tomorrow... watching the man with the vest pour boiling water into the little glass mug with the stem on it, letting it warm, and then so smoothly mixing all the ingredients for a long row of them, yet making it not seem like an assembly line. He's just very good at it. The tiniest dollop of real whipped cream that immediately starts to liquify over the hot surface, and turn creamy brown in delicate whorls on the surface. *sigh* I suddenly very badly need a cup of JP's badass espresso. But I need to finish some work, and pack carefully for wandering around streets...
