Today is Janet's Birthday...

February 10th, 2008 (01:02 pm)

One of our regulars, at work.
She and her best friend Penny, come nearly every day
when they themselves
get off from their respective jobs with the City--to have a couple of pints
and wind down.

Janet and Penny...I adore them.
I can't really tell how old they are, late 50's...early 60's?
Good ole Austin gals with a Texas dose of chutzpah each.

Penny is a retired cop, with large brassy red hair...that only Southern Belles
of her particular caliber
can pull off.

*grins*

Janet is the brunette, her metal polished to a slightly more refined glow.
Pixie points at her cheeks, and an edge all her own--can't imagine why
I have such affection for her...and her many stories.

*grins harder*

So as I raced home last night after work, hoping to catch the 11PM showing of my
beloved TORCHWOOD...but knowing I would invariably have to wait until the 1 AM
and 2 AM third run reruns--I stopped by the all night grocery and picked up the whole
wheat flour and bottle of Brer Rabbit Black Strap Molasses I would need

To whip up a batch of my Ginger's Snaps, that our Janet is so fond of.

See, my ginger snaps don't snap, they chew... and they burn a bit on the tongue.
I've been perfecting the recipe for years--and only make them on very special occasions.

You have to let the dough steep overnight, let all the spices meld and marry.
Good things, take time...and a certain degree of ceremony.
Like Friendships.

The two of them came to visit me in Hospital after the accident, but I had checked out
only hours earlier--to head back to Waxahachie with my folks, to recover.
I am told they asked about me frequently.

Their little waitress.
Our lives tied together with simple twine, un-events, peppered by the wild gestures
of The Sisters whims.

There are many things I thought I would be, wanted to be...when I was a little girl.
A painter, a teacher, an actress, an interdimensional super hero...

But I find--with all my travels, and all my standing still?
The greatest thing I have ever found
to be known as or to know, is:
A Regular.

Few things in this 'Verse can be depended on.

So I am baking off 5 dozen cookies, and heading into work at 2 PM on my day off...
To celebrate the day one of my favourite Regulars came into this world.
Join me in spirit, if not flesh--if you are reading this, chances are good you know exactly
what I am on about.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANET.

And marvelous that she and your love for her can be celebrated through Schoolhouse Rock!
